ORTHODOXY Sketches

Just a quick update here, but a little while ago I added a page to the Projects section – it’s called “Sketches” (was “Sketches & Miscellaneous”). Basically it’s just a ‘running gallery’ of sketches, WIPs, and mostly unfinished things I’ve been doing recently. Last night I did a few sketches for my friend Jordan Voltz’s KickStarter Project, Orthodoxy RPG. Below is my favorite color sketch (there are 3 additional sketches on the Sketches page), as well as one of the new headers for the page sections.

I chose to do a less traditional representation and focused on “duality” (a purposeful mis-reading of “duel”). I actually reasoned it out, too – duels often occur(ed) between friends/acquaintances over perceived slights & wrongs, so “friend & enemy”.

Jordan asked me to create some new headers (or update the old ones; I chose to make new ones) with some sort of embellishment rather than just text on a textured background. The nature of the Kickstarter site doesn’t allow for changing the page background or even the color of the font, so I went with all new headers, black on white. One of the major rewards we’ve offered are laminated, hand-embellished player screens (“sect screens”) – 5 to each backer pledging $100+! – and we’ve got 2 backers who’ll be receiving those. I chose the font and the design for the header with those screens in mind; depending on what I can find at an acceptable price, I’m hoping we’ll be able to make the sect screens out of fairly heavy-duty parchment (or kraft-paper-colored) paper rather than white/off-white. That will best offset the hand-embellishment, I think – except an update about those player/sect screens fairly soon!

Eventful Summer

Of a sort, really. Although I confess I don’t have much in the way of artistic or cartographic updates, this is primarily because I spent the summer looking for a job. I suppose I’ll finally have to accept that a bachelor’s, especially in English, really isn’t enough any more. At least not for any of the work I’d like to do long-term.

Anyway, I am still working on 2 commissions I received way back in late April/early May from 2 wonderfully understanding people, and I do have a rough map for one of those ready to share.

terrainmap

This is a top-down view of the buildings as laid out in Google SketchUp 8 over top of a rough sketch the client sent. The Royal Palace (which was described as being similar to the inner bailey of a castle) is missing, as is the prison gatehouse near the center of the map. I’m not sure how to create the correct terrain for this map in SketchUp, but since the final map style is supposed to be sort of 17th century aerial/bird’s eye view I’m actually thinking of just pulling the buildings up to get the vertical lines, setting the camera to parallel projection, and then printing out a screenshot to ‘trace’ over.

The other map commission I’m working on, the client has requested I use CC3; at the moment, I don’t have any exported images to put here, but I’m planning on having something up sometime this weekend. I’m currently working on placing the terrain symbols, working north to south (and roughly east to west).

Finally, I’m also working on a map for a friend’s Warhammer 40k game. The maps can be found HERE; I’ll be uploading updates as I complete them, probably once a week or so for a while since they’re playing Saturdays.

Late Update

Wow, it’s been awhile. I have been working on several projects, on and off, but haven’t taken the time to update.

I have a new update for the map I’m creating for Matt Hoffman (technospiritualist):

Commissioned Map

And I recently (re-)started my world building project. You can follow my progress at Worlds of Sand, where I hope to update at least weekly. I’m also open for all sorts of commissions! You can find me on the Cartographers Guild forums or just e-mail me through this blog (I’m thinking of setting up on Deviantart too).

I am still planning on rearranging this blog a bit, which means some posts may disappear pretty soon as I move things around. I’m not restarting, though; I just want to move some things to a different home (like those photos of Paris, randomly taking up tons of post-space …). Most everything will reappear somewhere else at some point, so if you’re just coming to the site and wondering if you missed something, you probably haven’t.

Hopefully I’ll be able to update more often now!
